Security Cameras That Survive Cyclone Season: A Darwin Installer's Guide

Every build-up season we get the same call-outs: cameras full of condensation, recorders dead after a lightning storm, brackets streaking rust down a rendered wall eighteen months after a southern-spec install. Most of it is preventable — here's what actually matters, and what fails when it's skipped.

The mounting problem: Darwin sits in the cyclone band

Darwin sits in the tropical-cyclone region of the Australian wind loading standard — the band the building code treats as cyclonic. Wind rating gets talked about a lot for roofing and sheds and almost never for the small hardware bolted to the outside of a building, which is exactly what a CCTV camera is.

Housings: what IP66 and IP67 actually buy you

Ingress protection ratings tell you two things — dust and water:

  • IP66: dust-tight, and protected against powerful water jets. This is the sensible baseline for any exterior camera in Darwin. Wind-driven monsoon rain is functionally a water jet aimed at every seal on the housing.
  • IP67: dust-tight, and survives temporary immersion. Worth specifying for low-mounted cameras, gate positions, and anywhere water sheets or pools during a monsoon burst.

Two caveats the spec sheet won't tell you. First, an IP rating describes the housing as manufactured — an installer who drills it for a cable gland and doesn't reseal it properly has voided the physics, whatever the sticker says. Second, ratings don't cover humidity cycling. A camera that breathes 85% humidity air all build-up, then chills overnight, will condense internally unless it has decent seals and a desiccant that gets replaced at service time. UV: the slow killer

The dry season is what quietly destroys cheap gear. Six months of high-UV sun perishes non-stabilised plastics: brackets chalk and crack, cable sheaths split, and the first monsoon rain then finds copper through the cracked insulation.

Spec around it:

  • UV-stabilised cable for every exterior run, or cable in conduit — never bare indoor-grade cable zip-tied along a fascia.
  • Metal-bodied cameras over plastic where budget allows; where plastic housings are used, they need to be genuinely UV-rated, not just "outdoor".
  • Conduit and fittings rated for sun exposure. Standard grey PVC conduit becomes brittle surprisingly fast on a north-facing wall.

Surge and lightning: protect the whole chain

The Top End is among the most lightning-active regions in Australia, and storm season is when we replace the most electronics. Direct strikes are rare; induced surges — a strike nearby pushing a spike down power or data lines — are routine.

A camera system is a chain of conductors running around your building, and it's only as protected as its worst point:

  • Surge protection on the power side of the recorder and any PoE switch, not just a basic powerboard.
  • Ethernet surge protectors on long exterior cable runs, particularly anything crossing between buildings or up a pole — those runs are antennas for induced spikes.
  • Proper earthing of metal poles and brackets carrying cameras.
  • A UPS on the recorder so brown-outs and the flickering supply during storms don't corrupt the recording database. A recorder that loses power mid-write can lose far more footage than the outage itself.

The pattern we see in storm-damage call-outs is almost always the same: the cameras survive, and the unprotected switch or recorder they all feed into is dead — taking the whole system with it.

Salt air: the harbour tax

Anywhere near the harbour or the northern beaches — Nightcliff, Fannie Bay, Cullen Bay, East Point, the CBD towers — salt-laden air works on every ferrous component continuously. Mild-steel brackets and zinc-passivated screws that would last a decade down south start streaking rust here within a couple of years.

The fix is boring and absolute: 316 stainless fixings and brackets near the coast, every time. Aluminium camera bodies with marine-grade coatings where available. Dielectric grease on connector threads. And a service visit that actually inspects and replaces sacrificial hardware before it fails, which is part of our standard CCTV maintenance scope.

What fails in the wet, and why

The failure list from any Darwin wet season, ranked by frequency:

  1. Condensation inside domes and lenses — humidity cycling through poorly sealed housings.
  2. Power-side electronics — surges through unprotected supplies during lightning storms.
  3. Corroded connections — water tracking into unsealed joins, accelerated by salt air.
  4. Cable failures — UV-perished sheaths admitting water, or rodents in the roof space chewing runs during the build-up.
  5. Mechanical failures — brackets and fixings working loose in repeated squalls.

What IP rating do security cameras need in Darwin?
IP66 as a minimum for any exterior camera; IP67 for low or exposed positions where water sheets or pools during monsoon rain. The install matters as much as the rating — cable entries must be sealed to the same standard as the housing.
Are there cyclone-rated security cameras?
Cameras themselves aren't certified against wind loading the way roofing is — what makes an installation cyclone-aware is the mounting: fixing into structure, short stiff brackets, sealed junction boxes and sensible placement under eaves where possible.
Why does my camera fog up in the build-up?
Humid air inside the housing condenses when the temperature drops overnight. It points to a seal that's degraded or was never properly made, or a spent desiccant. It's serviceable — and worth fixing before the wet, not during it.
Will a surge protector really save my CCTV system in a storm?
Layered protection genuinely changes outcomes: power-side surge protection plus Ethernet protectors on exposed runs plus a UPS on the recorder addresses the induced spikes that do most storm damage. Nothing makes a system strike-proof, but most of what we replace each wet was unprotected.
How often should coastal cameras be serviced?
Near the harbour, annually at minimum — ideally before the build-up. Corrosion inspection, seal and desiccant replacement, bracket torque check and a surge-protection test.
Is it worth installing cameras during the wet season?
Yes — exterior work gets scheduled around the weather, and the system is proven in the conditions it has to survive. The worst time to discover a spec problem is a year after install.
