Every Top End household has a cyclone plan for the house. Very few have one for the security system — which is a gap, because a cyclone is precisely when working cameras matter most and when badly installed ones become debris. A camera screwed into fascia board or thin cladding is held by a few threads in soft or thin material, and under sustained cyclonic loading those threads let go. The camera then becomes a projectile on the end of its own cable, and the failure usually takes a chunk of fascia with it.
Through-bolt mounting is the difference. Instead of screws biting into cladding, bolts pass through to structure — masonry, steel or framing — and clamp the bracket against something that is itself engineered to stay on the building. Combined with stainless hardware that has not spent five years corroding, a through-bolted camera rides out the same wind event that strips screw-mounted equipment off a street's worth of houses. It is our standard method on external equipment, specified in the quote rather than improvised on a ladder.
Before the build-up arrives, walk the system the way we would. Grab every external camera bracket and try to move it — any play means fasteners have loosened or corrosion is working on the mount, and either is fixed cheaply now and expensively in December. Look at cable entries and glands for perished seals, because the first monsoonal burst will find any gap you did not.
Inside, the checks are about endurance. Alarm and system backup batteries age quietly in Top End heat, and cyclone season is when mains power fails for hours or days — a tired battery reveals itself at the worst possible moment, so test or replace ahead of season. Confirm the recorder is actually recording every camera, not just displaying them, and check that surge protection on power and data paths is present and intact, because storm season is one long surge-exposure test.
Once a cyclone watch or warning covers your area, the system joins the rest of your preparation list. Charge everything: phones, power banks, and any battery-backed equipment, so that if mains power drops for an extended period you can still reach cameras and review footage. Confirm recording is running on all cameras and that storage has headroom rather than sitting nearly full.
Then do the step almost everyone skips: export anything already on the recorder that you would hate to lose — footage of an earlier incident, anything with legal or insurance relevance — onto a separate device or cloud storage. Recorders are robust, but a cyclone that takes the roof takes the recorder with it, and footage that exists in one place effectively exists nowhere. Ten minutes of exporting is cheap insurance against that.
Finally, photograph your property, inside and out, while it is intact. Your cameras will document the storm; your photos document the before, and the pair together is exactly what an insurance conversation wants.
Once it is safe to be outside, check the system with the same caution you apply to everything post-cyclone — treat any downed cable as live until proven otherwise, and leave anything electrical that has been submerged alone until it is inspected. From the ground, look over each camera for physical damage, shifted aim and water intrusion behind housings, and check that the recorder came back cleanly when power returned.
Some damage hides. A housing that took wind-driven rain may work today and corrode over the following months; a system that survived on the surge protector may have consumed the protector doing it. If the system took a serious event, a professional post-storm inspection is worth it — we check seals, test surge protection, review recorded footage integrity and catch the slow failures before the next event finds them.
A working camera system through a cyclone produces something genuinely valuable: a timestamped record of what happened to your property and when. Footage showing the sequence of damage — when water entered, when the fence came down, what failed first — gives an insurance assessment something concrete to work from, and it documents any looting or intrusion in the disrupted days afterwards, when properties stand open and occupants are elsewhere.
We frame this carefully: footage does not decide claims, insurers do, and every policy is its own contract. But assessors work from evidence, and a property owner who can show recorded fact rather than offer recollection is in a stronger conversation. It is one more reason the preparation above matters — the system only serves as a witness if it is mounted well enough to survive and powered well enough to keep recording.
