Safer Business Grant NT: Funded Security Upgrades for Territory Businesses

The Northern Territory's Safer Business Grant's most recent round closed Monday 31 August 2026; this page will be updated when a new round is announced. It's the NT Government's current program for helping Territory businesses harden their premises against break-ins: up to $10,000 towards physical security for a fixed commercial premises, up to $2,500 for a mobile business.

Who can apply

Eligibility under the current round centres on Territory Enterprises — for-profit or not-for-profit legal entities operating in the NT — holding the legal rights to the commercial premises or mobile business being secured. The guidelines also let commercial landlords and NT bodies corporate apply for works to common property — up to the full $10,000 — even where the landlord or body corporate isn't itself a Territory Enterprise, provided a Territory business actively trades from the location. Confirm which category fits you when you apply.

If you lease, confirm early that your landlord is comfortable with fixed installations like cameras and door hardware — that conversation is easier to have this week than the week applications close.

What security work fits

The program funds practical improvements to the physical security of eligible commercial assets. For most Darwin and Palmerston businesses, that means the things that actually stop break-ins and give police something to work with afterwards:

CCTV

A commercial camera system covering entries, tills, storerooms and rear laneways — recorded locally, viewable from your phone. Alarm systems

Access control

Keyed locks are the weak point in most small commercial premises — keys walk out with staff and never come back. Electronic access control on staff doors and stock areas means revoking a fob in seconds instead of rekeying the building.

Physical hardening

Screens, shutters, improved locking hardware and similar works can also respond to an identified risk. Confirm the eligible-works detail in the current program guidelines before locking in a scope.

The common thread: the works have to respond to a genuine security risk at your premises. A quote that says "supply and install 8 cameras" is weaker than one that says "cover the rear roller door and side laneway where the last two attempted break-ins occurred."

What happened to Biz Secure?

If you were searching for the NT Biz Secure program — it closed to new applications on 30 June 2026. Biz Secure was the more generous predecessor: up to $15,000 (GST exclusive) per business location with the government covering 75% of approved costs, plus a security audit that was fully funded under the program — valued at up to $2,000 for an individual business, or up to $7,000 for a cluster of neighbouring businesses.

That round is finished. If you hold an approved Biz Secure application, your approval terms stand — talk to the program administrators about your completion obligations. For everyone else, the Safer Business Grant is the live pathway: a lower cap, a larger share funded by you, and no audit component confirmed in the current round — so budget on your co-contribution share being yours to fund, and get independent advice on scope from your installer.

Why it's worth moving on

Property crime remains the dominant category of offending in Darwin — NT Police statistics for May 2026 recorded 497 property offences in the Darwin urban area against 290 offences against the person, including 48 house break-ins and 13 commercial break-ins in that single month. No dramatising needed: property crime here is genuinely elevated, and commercial premises that look unwatched after hours carry most of the exposure.

A co-funded grant round is the cheapest a proper security system will ever be for your business. Between rounds you're funding the whole project yourself — so it pays to have a scope ready when the next round is announced.

When does the Safer Business Grant close?
The most recent round closed Monday 31 August 2026. The program is scheduled to run twice-yearly rounds until mid-2029; this page will be updated when a new round is announced.
How much can my business get?
Up to $10,000 for a fixed commercial premises, or up to $2,500 for a mobile business, on a 50:50 co-contribution — the grant covers half the eligible project cost and your business funds the other half. Payment works as a reimbursement after the works are done: keep your itemised invoice and proof of payment, and check the completion-evidence requirements in your funding agreement when approval comes through.
Can the grant be used for CCTV, alarms and access control?
The program funds practical improvements to the physical security of eligible commercial assets that address an identified security risk. CCTV, intrusion alarms and access control are the core of most commercial security scopes. Where installation is needed to achieve the security outcome, the guidelines require supply and installation by a commercial supplier — and note that replacing equipment that still works, routine maintenance and ongoing subscriptions such as monitoring are excluded.
Is the NT Biz Secure program still open?
